Mamalicious wishlist

Most of all, I miss wearing dresses.

+MAMALICIOUS has some affordable, stylish dresses, tops, and lingerie for nursing mums. They have really nice jeans too, for that inbetween phase I seem to be in. Too skinny for my maternity jeans; too fat for my pre-pregnancy jeans. New mum problems.

Maternity knickers

Can I speak candidly?

I have flat out refused to get special maternity underwear. Most of the maternity knickers I see in the shops look exactly the same as regular underwear so I don't really get the point. And I've not wanted a pair, until now. Not seeing a need for them until I am 39 1/2 weeks pregnant is probably a testament to how unnecessary they are. I only want them now because I am so uncomfortable. Let's be honest though, everything is uncomfortable when you're this pregnant. I am not going to buy special panties when Ham could be born any minute. I don't know, maybe afterwards I will find that all my underwear are too big because they've been stretched out by my bump. Guess we'll see; I'll let you know.

Bad investments

I did a post Tuesday about maternity essentials or what I considered to be good investments. Well, my choices haven't all been smart. Here are some of the bad investments I've made during my pregnancy:

Interview clothes
Nobody is going to hire you . Definitely do not need these. It's one thing to buy professional maternity clothes if you have a job that requires them. It's totally different if you get interview clothes. Don't bother.

Baby Clothes
People will want to buy you things and clothes are probably the most fun gift to shop for. Make it easy for them when they ask what you need: tell them you want clothes and what size. Really, it's better than saying you want a sterilizer or something. Way less fun to buy. I purchased a bunch of baby clothes just to get bundles more from neighbors, family, friends, and pretty much everyone who hear I was pregnant.

Lingerie
I don't know what I was thinking to be honest. This had to be my dumbest purchase by far. I guess I still wanted to feel sexy with my changing figure. Best to buy lingerie that is an actual maternity line.

Baby Blankets
This is another case of letting people gift blankets to you. I was going to knit Ham a baby blanket myself but I ended up getting 8 baby blankets as gifts. And I don't even know that many people! This is something friends and family will want to get it for you, so let them.

Clothes for Clubbing
Everybody has an opinion about how you should conduct yourself and most people aren't shy about it either. Turns out nobody wants to go to the club with a pregnant lady. When did it become wrong for a girl to want to get dolled up and dance?

Underwired Bras
Your bra size will get bigger and bigger throughout your pregnancy. Then your breasts will get even larger and your chest size will get smaller when you start nursing. It's much better to buy accommodating bras during this time. When you lock yourself in to an underwire size there is less room for comfortable growth. I bought two underwired bras in my second trimester and I can barely stand to wear them now.

French maternity

I stumbled upon this French maternity line, Envie de Fraises. It's so effortless. They've got a lot of basics with stylish twists.

Grey dress, €39.99

The tunic, belt, and legging set looks especially cool and versatile. I've never looked good in a drop waist but I was pretty pleased with my attempt. I didn't exactly have a belt, so I used an old scarf. None of my old belts fit anymore.

Lingerie is what the french do best and this site has some gorgeous maternity sets.

Maternity/nursing nightgown €29.99

Figleaves

I finally came to terms with the fact that I needed to buy a new bra at around 15 weeks and I am so happy I did. It was amazing, being able to breathe. Don't put it off; do yourself a solid and buy a maternity bra at the first moment you feel uncomfortable.
There is a lot of beige out there. You will not want for a skin colored maternity bra. Thats....fine. Everyone needs a basic flesh toned bra but what about the fun? I was afraid I was going to be forced to wear boring granny panty sets for the next year until I found +figleaves.com. They have a huge range of nursing and maternity bras and sets that are sexy.

They have lounge wear too! Sometimes I think that lounge wear is the most important investment you make during your pregnancy. A good nightie is a god send on those nights when you have to get up and pee about a million times. You will wear your comfy yoga pants and tank top more than you wear any other maternity item you purchase.

What NOT to wear during your pregnancy (from your pre-pregnancy wardrobe)

Before I actually became pregnant there were times I would buy clothes and think "Hey, I can wear this when I am pregnant too!" Not always. You don't realize that it's not just your belly that expands; you get bigger all over, even your feet! This is all based on my personal experience: a nearly 28 week pregnant lady addicted to clothes.

1) Anything you want to wear post-pregnancy
Even though you can fit into it doesn't mean you will want to wear it because it's about to be stretched to high hell. I love my vintage horse tee so it will have to go in storage.

2) Buttons and zippers
It's not a good look; better to buy something that lays right rather than making you look like a balloon that's about to pop.

3) Heels
So sad to see them go but my balance is so bad these days, I don't want to topple over in the street. Plus you're feet may do a bit of swelling so strappy sandles are not always a good idea.

4) Watch that hemline
Short circle skirts are cute but they are the worst perpetrators. You really don't want to be caught in the wind wearing one of these. So even if it fits, mind the bottom. A wonky hemline just looks sloppy.

5) The bust crusher
Tops and dresses that I thought I could wear during my pregnancy are turning out to be unaccommodating in the bust region. At 14 weeks pregnant I was going to a wedding and tried to wear a princess cut tube top with the same problem. It was obscene; your extra chest has to go somewhere and it will spill out the top in ways that you wish it wouldn't. Makes me sad...

6) Super plunging necklines
Yes, your boobs are looking pretty great these days. However, unless you want to remind people where your eyes are all day, it's maybe better not to. Plus there are some weird adult baby fetishes out there, yikes! But I am a bit of an introvert; if you are into the extra attention then werk it gurl.

7)  Jeans or denim
Trust. I got my maternity jeans around 15 weeks and it was a big feeling of relief. I was in denial about it, thought I could just wear leggings for 7 months. There is a lot of good denim out in maternity so it's not as bad as you think it's going to be. Buy them sooner rather than later, you'll be happy you did. I think my expression says it all.

8) Elastic waist bands
You don't have a waist anymore, remember? It makes you look wide and is uncomfortable to boot.

9) Tops that expose the lower half of your bump
Just don't. It's not cute.

10) Your old bra
Your boobs git bigger, your nipples get sore, and your chest expands, so don't torture yourself by trying to fit your big bust into a little bra. It hurts. Make sure you go get sized because you are changing. Believe me when I tell you that you will look and feel SO much better if your bra fits you properly.
